How often do I hear from "progressives" or "soft" conservatives that want to be perceived as "reasonable" that they favor government subsidies to develop certain technologies? At the heart of the logic is: how would we have achieved greatness (a la made it to the moon, created the computer, etc) without government "investments?" Makes you wonder how we invented cars, airplanes, the wheel, lights, stirrups, airconditioning, sign language, combustable engines, abacus, aspirin, barcodes, DOS, iPhones, bow and arrow, pencils and paper, and fake boobs. In short, it is a "boob" argument and reflects ignorance in how markets function.
OK, so perhaps 1 in 1,000 projects the government invests/wastes your children's future tax liabilities on produces something great like...a nuclear deterrent . Otherwise, it is usually a ploy to play on your emotions, have an excuse for taxing you more, paying off lobbyists and interest groups, and to look like they are doing something so as to get reelected.
