Bin Laden Dead, Move Along, Nothing To See Here

Tsarnaev Was Too Dangerous For Mecca, But Not Boston

Investors Business Daily Editorial, May 2, 2013

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was apparently too dangerous to be allowed to go to Mecca, but not Boston. Saudi Arabia unofficially says that if Janet Napolitano read her mail, the Boston bombing might have been prevented.

Britain's Daily Mail reported Tuesday that, according to a senior Saudi Arabian official, the Saudi government last year issued a written warning to our Department of Homeland Security about the danger of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the dead lead suspect in last month's Boston Marathon bombings.

Separate from Moscow's now-famous multiple warnings about Tsarnaev, the Saudi alert "was based on human intelligence developed independently in Yemen," according to the U.K. paper, and the Islamic kingdom's concerns were serious enough that the Chechnya native was reportedly denied a visa in December 2011 for a pilgrimage to Mecca.

The Saudi warning, also received by the British government according to the Mail, "did name Tamerlan specifically," as well as three Pakistanis, as potential jihadists, and "was sent to the Department of Homeland Security at the highest level."

While both the DHS and the White House deny receiving such written communication, the paper says a Homeland Security official anonymously confirmed Tuesday that the letter does indeed exist.

And records say President Obama met in the Oval Office with Saudi Interior Minister Mohammed bin Nayef 3-1/2 months ago.

An aide to a Republican congressman on the House Homeland Security Committee suggested to the Mail that DHS might not have passed the Saudi communication onto the White House "because of a turf war" in which "they sometimes jealously guard the very intel they should be sharing the most freely" — reminiscent of the communication wall erected during the Clinton administration between the FBI and CIA that prevented the 9/11 attacks from being foiled.

But why should Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano bother opening mail from Saudi Arabia? Osama bin Laden is dead. And, according to Obama, "working with Joe Biden and our national security team, we've been able to decimate al-Qaida."

Napolitano and others in this administration have swallowed so much of their own baloney about the catching of bin Laden being the be-all end-all in the global war on terror, they obviously saw no reason to make much effort protecting the homeland against threats that no longer exist
